DE MEYE
De Meye Philip Myburgh
Philip Myburgh

DE MEYE WINES

The farm and winery is named after the De Meye River in Holland. This is where the first Myburgh who came to South Africa in 1665, used to live. Our label is designed around the Myburgh Family crest.

The farm is situated in Stellenbosch, sub region known as Greater Simonsberg, South Africa's most prestigious wine making area. We are on the northern side of the town Stellenbosch , which makes up the Simonsberg/ Muldersvlei ward. Our neighbouring wineries are Kanonkop, Uitkyk, Warwick, Laibach and Lievland.

The owner is Jan Myburgh, who is the fifth generation to farm in this area. He started farming with vines over 30 years ago. Grapes were sold to Nederburg and Stellenbosch Farmers' Winery. In 1997, it was decided to renovate some of the old farm buildings and make our own wines.

Our winemaker, Marcus Milner and Philip Myburgh, manage the winery. Marcus spent 10 years at a neighbouring estate, Warwick and in 1999, he joined us at DE MEYE.

The total size of the farm is 150 hectares, of which 60 hectares are planted to vineyards and 20 under fruit trees. In total we could have 100 hectares planted to vines. The grape varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage and Chardonnay. Chenin and Sauvignon Blanc are also grown on De Meye, but these grapes are sold off to different neighbouring wineries. We have recently been Eurepgap Certified. Euregap stands for European Good Agricultural Practices, this certification will be a requirement for the European supermarkets that buy our fruit

De Meye Shiraz rose
Shiraz Rose

2007 Shiraz Rosé

A shiraz rosé that is both sumptuous and delicate. With notes of strawberries everywhere, there is a pleasing core of spice and crisp acidity to balance the fruit flavors. This is a dry rosé that has a viscous texture which can fool the palate into guessing it's off-dry ... but with 3.5 g/l residual sugar, this is definitely a dry, wonderful wine.

Don't be fooled into thinking that pink is sweet or that rosé is only for summer. De Meye Shiraz Rosé has the weight to hold up to a winter feast of turkey or duck.

Perfect with salads, fish, spicy foods and BBQs. Great with poultry.

De Meye Chardonnay

Chardonnay 2005

Refreshing notes of lime, citrus and ripe peaches. Fresh lime on the palate, balanced with soft wood tannins, following through to a long finish of peaches and apples.

This is the last vintage that De Meye will make using oak barrel fermentation. We will be sad to see such a well-balanced and deftly constructed chardonnay leave their stable ... but we can always hold hope for a future return!

2007 Little River Chenin Blanc

Pears and guava and gummy bears JUMP out of the glass in this wonderfully round yet crisp sipper. It has viscosity and verve.

Great with appetisers, cheese - or white fish with a mango/caper salsa for dinner.

2005 Little River Cabernet Sauvignon - Shiraz

Ripe blackberry with hints of spice and cedar. Ripe berries, bramble fruit and chocolate characterises this wine. Well balanced with subtle oak tannins.

2002 Trutina

Rich concentration of blackcurrant and freshly crushed black pepper.  Intense and concentrated with a complex structure giving this wine a full mouth feel. Flavors of ripe, dark berries and minerals are balanced with dry oak tannins, finishing off with a spicy charm.
