History

Meyer Family Cellars is a small, family-owned winery situated in the picturesque Yorkville Highlands of Mendocino County. At once a leading artisanal winery in one of California’s emerging viticultural areas, Meyer Family Cellars blends establishing this new Appellation with the legacy of Silver Oak Cellars.

One of the state’s iconic wine brands, Meyer Family Cellars occupies a unique place in the story of California wine. It was established in 1987 by Silver Oak founders and former owners Justin and Bonny Meyer, who dreamt of a family wine brand that drew upon their extensive experience in the Napa and Alexander Valleys. Incorporated in the plan too was their son, Matt, a well-traveled student of wine and graduate of the enology and viticulture program at the University of California Davis.

Today

Today Meyer Family Cellars is in the capable hands of co-winemakers Matt and Karen Meyer. Their approach to winemaking mirror the unique position of their product. While their wine incorporates “old world” balanced acidity and minerality with “new world” ripeness and forward fruit, similarly, Matt and Karen apply the wisdom gleaned from family history while welcoming new ideas into the process.

Meyer Family Syrah
An elegant, cool climate syrah

~ Syrah ~

2004 Mendocino County Syrah

The 2004 syrah boasts aromas of ripe raspberry and blueberry, intermingled with sweet vanilla bean. Patient barrel-aging has further integrated the wine's tannins, while preserving fruit and adding a subtle spiciness to its aroma. The structure and pronounced acidity of this syrah allow it to pair beautifully with rich meat and pasta dishes, including cheese ravioli, spit-roasted pork, and lamb shanks. Once open, this wine develops very slowly in the glass, so allow a relaxing meal to enjoy it fully.

Meyer Family Port
A silky, patiently-aged port

~ Port ~

Meyer Family Port

Made in a modified solera method, Meyer Family Port is one of California's signature fortified wines. This rich and complex Port is a blend of several vintages of old-vine Zinfandel that average eight years of age at release.

On the nose, the Meyer Family Port displays aromas of baked fruit and cooking spice, along with warm notes of alembic Zinfandel brandy. Rich and round on the palate, its lush flavors of sweet cassis and brandied cherries are framed by integrated oak and fine acidity. This delicious Port has a long, concentrated finish and pairs beautifully with artisanal blue cheeses, intense chocolate desserts, or a good cigar.

Meyer Family Bonny's Vineyard
A bold, full-bodied cabernet

~ Bonny's Vineyard ~

Among the tapestry of historic vineyards in Napa Valley, there are a few standout names, but even fewer sites, if any, involve the rare combination of legendary wine, romance, and a touch of mystery. Bonny's Vineyard is such a place.

This four-acre vineyard in the Oakville District is both a special piece of land and a unique part of Napa history. It was planted in 1974 by Justin Meyer, the winemaker and co-founder of Silver Oak Cellars, as a gift to his wife, Bonny. Ideally situated in a gravelly spot adjacent to Conn Creek on the valley floor, Bonny's Vineyard was responsible for a memorable string of Silver Oak vintages over the course of two decades. From Bonny's Cabernet Sauvignon vines, Justin Meyer coaxed wines that were celebrated for their elegant structure, dark intense fruit, and at times controversial notes of bell pepper and eucalyptus.

It's been a pleasure to bring back this much-loved wine with the release of Bonny's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 last August. While the reservations were filled shortly after it's release, you may sign up for the waiting list on the Bonny's website.
